The Short Answer
Our top pick for families in Los Cabos is Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos in San José del Cabo, minutes from the airport. It has the KidZ Club, a water park with waterslides and a splash zone, and a 2,335-square-foot two-bedroom suite for bigger families, so kids have plenty to do without the ocean.
- Want to swim in the sea: Riu Santa Fe and Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas are on El Médano, the Cabo San Lucas bay that the tourism board lists as swimmable. Riu points to designated swimming areas about 2 km along the beach.
- Teens: Krystal Grand Los Cabos has the Adventure Friends teens' club, and Grand Velas Los Cabos has a Teens' Club. See our teens guide.
- On a budget: Royal Solaris Los Cabos, whose Mini Club has its own water park. See our affordable family resorts.
Which Los Cabos Beaches Are Safe for Swimming
The Los Cabos tourism board says many resort beaches are unsuitable for swimming because of rough surf, rip currents and undertows. It lists these as swimmable:
- Cabo San Lucas: El Médano Beach and Lovers Beach near El Arco.
- Tourist Corridor: Chileno, Santa María, Las Viudas and Palmilla, on the Sea of Cortez side.
- San José del Cabo: Playa Acapulquito.
Hard Rock Los Cabos, on the Pacific side, says strong currents make its ocean unsafe for swimming. The hotel-zone beach in San José del Cabo isn't on the tourism board's swimmable list, so plan on the pools at Hyatt Ziva, Krystal Grand and Royal Solaris, and take a day trip to a swimmable cove.
